The deeper magic of this Sari Silk Christmas Stocking
The origin story of the Christmas stocking is a fascinating one: Jolly Old Saint Nick isn’t just a nickname – it’s believed to be the true inspiration behind Santa Claus. St. Nicholas of Myra, believed to be modern-day Turkey, was a rich man who lived in the 4th century and was known for his charitable nature. He took an interest in one particular villager, a nobleman who squandered his fortune after the passing of his wife. The man and his three daughters lived in a peasant’s cottage, and he couldn’t afford dowries for his three daughters – rendering them unable to marry. However, St. Nicholas wanted to help this family. The girls left their stockings to dry over the fireplace and St. Nicholas, wishing to remain anonymous, threw three bags of coins down the chimney. In the morning, the sisters found the gold coins in their stockings, allowing them to marry their husbands and live well for the rest of their lives.
Sari means “strip of cloth” in Sanskrit and is worn by women throughout India. When the sari would start coming apart, the women would take the silk and create beautiful crafts for the home. Eventually, the sari silk was born and can now be seen adding its beautiful colors to many things. Stuff this beautiful Christmas stocking with gifts or candy and hang it up for your kids to find on Christmas day. Or, hang them up in your home just for holiday decoration.
