Dia de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, is an ancient, sacred holiday originating in Mexico and celebrated throughout the Americas and Spain. Each November 1 and 2, households pay homage to departed family members with ofrendas – elaborate altars decorated with photos, flowers, favorite foods, and, of course, candles to guide the spirits back toward the earthly realm.

This candle honors the tradition of the ofrenda and was lovingly poured with an ivory soy wax blend into a skull-shaped glass jar, representing rebirth into the next stage of life. It’s anointed with my Memoriam Perfume, an SG favorite infused with notes of rose for open receptivity, marigold for respect and healing, heather for new beginnings, violet for encouraging love, ginger for freedom from uncertainty, yarrow for healing soul wounds, and tobacco for ancestor connection. It’s also infused with marigold and rose petals and a rose quartz chip stone for unconditional love and dissolving negativity. To add to the magic, each candle is topped with glitter and an orange aura quartz point to boost creativity, direct energy, and amplify your intentions. The deeper magic of my Ofrenda Altar Intention Candle

Dia de los Muertos is one of my favorite holidays! During this time, families gather to remember lost loved ones and honor the cycle of life and death. Traditional celebrations of this occasion are colorful, festive, and focused on building ofrendas for family members who have departed from this Earth.

The ofrenda is the centerpiece of any Day of the Dead celebration, and is traditionally adorned with colorful sugar skulls and bunches of marigold flowers to guide spirits on their journey back to the land of the living. Candles are an important feature of the ofrenda, and are lit to provide a beacon of light for those returning from beyond the veil.

Metaphysically speaking, skulls are powerful vessels of consciousness – they anchor our spirit to our body to amplify our physical connection to the human life we’re presently living. Skulls hold our secrets and carry our wisdom. Even after we transition from this life, skulls are said to hold and channel the knowledge they obtain from us and can transfer that information and wisdom to others.

This candle is blended with my Memoriam Perfume, which includes notes of rose, marigold, heather, violet, ginger, yarrow, and tobacco. Rose encourages soul connection and opens channels of receptivity. The scent of roses is common in the presence of the supernatural. Marigold is a flower of respect and admiration. It typically flowers in late summer, and in ancient times, this blooming period signified a time to enjoy life’s pleasures. Violet brings sweetness and an echo of time gone by – a place and space our elders remember. It can be worked with for protection and to encourage love. Ginger stimulates, purifies, strengthens, and awakens the senses and the physical body. It’s warming, lifts spirits, and encourages freedom from self-limiting beliefs and uncertainty. Yarrow is a soothing, purifying herb used for healing and relaxing. It’s a valuable ally for those experiencing a wounded soul. Tobacco has been used by Indigenous peoples for thousands of years to bridge the material and spiritual worlds. It’s a sacred herb of prayer, protection, purification, respect, peace, gratitude, and ancestor connection.
