These glass skull chalices for Mardi Gras are awesome. The first time I poured wine into one of them I was a bit giddy—and then the wine kicked in and I was even giddier. 🙂 These clear, delicate glasses honor one of my favorite wild and fun sabats. Also known as Fat Tuesday, this holiday refers to the numerous carnival celebrations that begin on or after the feast of the Epiphany. Mardi Gras translates from French as “Fat Tuesday.” This has to do with the tradition of consuming fatty, decadent foods in anticipation of the fasting that is practiced during the season of Lent.
Primarily an Anglican and Catholic tradition, Mardi Gras is nevertheless celebrated worldwide throughout several countries. This is generally regarded as a time to revel in pleasure, delight, and decadence. In other words, it’s a celebration of life.
The magic of these glass skull chalices
Skulls are powerful emblems in ritual, in magic, and throughout history—across cultures and creeds. They allow us to glimpse both death and rebirth, and grant us ancestral wisdom. Though they are often interpreted as omens of impending doom, the elders have shown us differently. Skulls are companions to us, they represent the remains of our ancestors, who’ve been made immortal through our own existence.
Whenever a skull is near me, I feel an otherworldy vibration enter the space, making its knowledge, protection, and guidance available to whomever is open to receive. Skulls facilitate a communion between the living and the dead.
